Noshing at the Bagel King

In the Publix shopping plaza on 436/Semoran near Howell Branch Road in Casselberry is Bagel King. I’ve eaten there quite a few times over the years, and have very much enjoyed their bagel sandwiches.

It’s a very casual place, where most items are served on plastic plates with plastic silverware, but the taste is definitely not casual. The seating is a bit spartan with wooden benches and chairs:

But as you can see on the right, there are more comfy chairs available. You seat yourself and then help yourself to a beverage (on the right):

You can grab a variety of juices and V-8 drinks from the cooler or a bottled water, and even a Doctor Brown’s soda:

.

They also have a variety of Coca-Cola fountain drinks to self-serve, and also iced teas and hot coffee. They have a variety of hot beverages, such as Vienna Lattes, cappuccino, mochaccino, chai tea, and flavored coffees. You can also order a smoothie, such as the Banana Honey Oatmeal Dream, the Breakfast Orange Julius (VERY yummy!), a Strawberry Pomegranate Acai Delight, and a “good karma” smoothie (made with strawberry, banana, granola, lowfat vanilla yogurt, and love!).

They offer breakfast all day, and have many different breakfast platters available. From omlettes with tomato, onions, green peppers and cheese to corned beef hash to French toast to applewood smoked honey bacon, there is something to tempt your tummy … and even items for those on a diet.

The deli delights range from veggie bagels, oven-roasted juicy turkey bagels, and wraps to honey walnut roasted chicken salad, whitefish salad, and egg salad. I had the Garlicky Hummus open-faced bagel, which I’ve gotten a few times before:

I ordered as a side bagel chips, which (as usual) were delicious and shown in the bag. What you can’t see is the fact that the cucumbers look like it had come from, in the words of my dining companion, “from the time of the pharaohs” or the fact that there was so little hummus on the bagel it was not visible until I peeled away the spinach. I ordered my sandwich on an everything bagel, which was toasted and delicious. Unfortunately, I was not willing to eat the piles of thick, visibly shrinking cucumber slices, which was a huge waste.

In addition to the deli delights, they have the King’s Belly Busters, which are huge sandwiches and melts - so huge, I haven’t had enough courage to try one yet! They offer a pizza bagel with provolone, a Swiss Tuna or Turkey Melt, a potato knish stuffed with corned beef/turkey/pastrami/roast beef, a Jewish Cuban, Hot & Spicy or regular corned beef, and a lean corned beef.

Their signature sandwiches are pretty non-deli fare, with a Spanish Fiesta sandwich, Italian Stallion sub, Asiago beef, Roast beef Philly panini, and a Chicken ciabatta. My friend got Lucille’s Mediterranean Delight (herb asiago foccacia bread with grilled breaded eggplant, garlicky hummus, spinach, carmelized onion, and a Bruschetta schmear):

She loved it. The sandwiches come with your choice of bagel chips (seen in my bag in the above pic), cole slaw, potato salad, baked potato chips, or a mini-knish. I always have to get some extra mini potato knishes to take home:

YUM!

Also available are soups and salads, as well as chili. They are also a bakery with many treats like fruit-filled homentachen (drool), raspberry crumb buns, danish strips, apple struedels, Rocky Road brownies, croissants, apple raisin squares, napoleons, black and white cookies, Chinese almond cookies, and much more. They also have a selection of fat-free and sugar-free bakery items.

They also cater. The restaurant itself is not kosher, but the catering is kosher and supervised under the rabbinical supervision of the Orlando Council. And they deliver! They have a take-out counter where you can get bags of regular and specialty bagels, and also have available a variety of about 20 different spreads from honey butty to chunky nova spread and more.

While I’m definitely bummed about my garlicky hummus bagel sandwich today, it’s not going to stop me from going back and trying one of the Belly Busters in the future. The service is fast and the staff is very nice, and that’s worth it to go back in and try another sandwich.
